Health update

Well, the good news is I don't have diabetes. The bad news is I have to get an ultrasound next week to see if I have fatty liver.   I swear, the lab techs had to poke me at least 5 times to get any blood out of me. And they had to get a lot out of me for my ultrasound next week apparently. It hurt quite a lot, but I guess I should be glad that ultrasounds don't hurt. Mom said it didn't hurt for hers (when she was pregnant with me).   I just wish they would leave me alone is a

Level 42

Two more days of wondering what could be wrong with me. In the midst of all that, I decided to work on Ugly, Uppity Umpire again. When I get angry or worried my eye starts hurting. So my eye has been hurting each night now. I made level 42. It took a LONG time to make this into a workable, non-easy level. I declared it finished, but easy. So I decided to work on it some more, moving more blocks and opening up new ways. This is a long way from what I had originally started with. I had t

So I'm working on Ugly Uppity Umpire again. I made level 41. It has 12 sprites moving independently. I had a working level 41 but I dubbed it too easy and wondered what I could do to make it harder. I opened some squares, put other blocks in until I had this: Since I design a new block every 8 levels it was time to design a new one. It kind of reminds me of the flag of New Mexico: Only in black and white. I was all set to get some nachos from Taco Bell tomorrow, but since my

Doctors are stupid.

My blog entry I wrote got flagged for content so I'll start over again.   So apparently my dumb doctor wants to see me about my blood test results. So now I have an appointment for next Friday at 11:45am. I bet he's going to tell me I have diabetes. Well you know what? I don't care! I'm not going to do anything special about it.

Those evil waffles

Work resumes on SGWP2. I thought I was done for the day but I got bored again and put in a 6-digit score. It works fine but it uses 6 variables. I don't think I'll run out of variables, though. But it is a lot better than using one 16-bit variable and then having the score run out if the player reaches 65,535 points. If the player reaches 999,999 points here, it will stay at 999,999 points and not roll back to 0.   I ordered a Inty 3 off eBay yesterday since I got tired of th

Another "too bored" project.

I have no idea for a game for this title screen. Does anyone? I thought of the rhyming "awful waffle" and thought to myself "Hey! I made a video game about waffles. What if I were to combine the two?" I made some eerie title music to go with the screen.   Tomorrow is the big day. I have to go to the doctor's office and get a blood test and I'll have him look at the rash on my butt and ask him what it is and how can I get rid of it because I'm tired of having to put neosporin on it

Walkin'

So this morning I took @Tanooki 's advice and made the guy walk the way he's facing. Took up all of my waking hours and more to get it working good. Found a few bugs that I think I fixed.     The majority of the trouble came with attempting to use sprite_prop to flip the sprites. Eventually I had to give up doing that and making flip sprites that I can call instead. So the next thing to do is design and add level 39 in.   It's been such a boring Saturday otherwise it felt lik

level 38

I introduced some new game mechanism. As the level designing keeps progressing, I figured I needed to mix things up a little. I designed a level that I wanted Ulysses to go off the screen and reappear on the other side. But after trying to do that, it wasn't going to work due to the moving tables I need to rely on for whether he can move or not. So I decided to do this: Add teleporation devices. When Ulysses steps into a teleportation device, he will reappear at the other one with a wh

Ugly Uppity Umpire update - July 27, 2023

I had to give up on Legend of Helga since I think it was too ambitious a project for me. So I went back to working on Ugly Uppity Umpire. As the levels get created, the more difficult it is to make new ones. I have 13 more to make before I get 50 (level 37 is already designed). If I think I can do it, I may make 56, which can be divided by 8 evenly to make things good and round them off. But I don't know. Another hard part about this is thinking up the passwords for these levels. My bu

The Legend of Helga (part 4)

I finally got the tree collision working. Well, sort of. You can move behind the tree without stopping. Oh well. I woke up at three this morning so I've been working on this for almost four hours. But you can go into the shop and be greeted by the shopkeeper. Since I have to keep a "catalog" of sorts about all my void and int functions, I decided I'd best try to get some more room for them in bank 0. Instead of 8% room left I now have 17%. Stuff I want to do tomorrow: make it so

The Legend of Helga (part 3)

This morning I added an info screen. The people in Helga's land use beans as currency. So a common saying in the land is: to be "beanless" means to be broke. So Pink is beanless. He needs to find some beans before he can get in the shop. And once he gets in the shop with a few beans, he'll then learn the horrible truth: The only toenail fungus remover in the land is owned by the evil Nanog, a huge, evil creature that has tons of toenail fungus so he has hoarded it all.   I am

The Legend of Helga (part 2)

So I began work on level 1. As in Frank the Fruit Fly, each level will be one bank large. Our hero can walk around now, but that's about it. I will make it so if you press Start, you will go to your inventory screen and see what you have. I'll also add an enemy here to defeat, but the ultimate goal here is to get to the Shop. There you will learn you have no money! And then Pink's quest begins.   To aid me in the making of this, I put in Link's Awakening in my Game Boy. It wa

The Legend of Helga

I got bored. I wanted to work on some Game Boy programming, but I didn't want to work on Ugly Uppity Umpire. So I made this. I don't know whether or not to turn it into a full-fledged game or not. Then I went to sleep for about 16 hours and woke up and worked on it some more. You can view the result of my boredom here in case you care. I filled up quite a lot, I only have 8% of the bank left, which is kind of weird since all I have in the game are a title screen and intro. Oh well. I tried this

Level 35

Here is level 35 of Ugly Uppity Umpire for Game Boy. The ghost chases you and the underwear moves from left to right at the bottom. I added in the underwear as I thought the level was too easy, especially without it. As you can see, I darkened the wood. I did this so it's easier to see the ghosts. So I will put level 36 in banks 2 and 3 and then start with the bank 4 unifying thing. This was because my code in bank 0 to get data info had it so the temporary level was temp=level/12. 36

Wow! A response!

So for the third time I tried to submit Frank the Fruit Fly to Incube8 Games. Well apparently the third time is the charm because shortly after my third attempt, I got an e-mail from them saying the form went through. I could have sworn I submitted my idea twice before. I clicked that submit button but nothing happened. So now what I need to do now is wait for a response. I don't have my hopes up. In fact, I'd be pleasantly surprised if they decided to publish it, but I doubt they will. Which is

Bread and butter

I've decided to continue making my Game Boy game I've been working on for about 9 months now. I guess I work on stuff really slowly because today I completed level 34. That may seem impressive, but not really since it's a Chip's-Challenge-type game. Since this isn't really a particularly hard game to make (all the "hard" stuff has been completed for the most part), I've decided to make one level per day. I will need to introduce more banks to the game as the game continues to get work

I'm sick of making scanlines steady

I'm going to stop making games for the Atari 2600. Reason: Jitteriness. I try and try to make the scanline steady but eventually it drops to 261 or goes up to 263, I played the stupid Fly game for 15 minutes, thought it was going good, until the scanline went up to 263. Since I'm sick of trying various things to try to make the scanline steady, I've decided to stop programming in assembly Atari 2600 altogether. You'd think a game about fruit flies in 2k would be easy, but nooooo. God for

Fruit Fly Fun Finished

After adding a few things to my 2600 game, I'm calling it finished. The only thing to do now is see if anyone runs into a bug and then try to fix it if one does. I took a few minutes to hook up the Atari 2600 and try it and it works just fine.   My poor Atari 2600. When I flip the black and white switch to color, the system restarts and I get back to the Harmony menu screen. I'm using a 4 switch model. I am so sick of Xfinity ads. All of them. They advertise waaaaay too much. So m

I don't feel so good.

Last night, my eye hurt. I went to sleep at about midnight or so and woke up at around 10 a.m. So I've been awake all day. I plan to go to sleep at around mindight again (earlier if I can't stand it any more) My eye doesn't hurt any more, but I still feel kind of sick. What doesn't help is a giant rash on your butt that you can feel hurting whenever you sit. I made 11 out of the 12 pages of Stupidman issue 2. I just need to think of something to put on page 12. So I remembered the (really stupid

Insomnia.

I can't sleep. So I decided to look through my computer for stuff to do when I came across a comic book I drew 3 years ago of Stupidman. It was only legible because I replaced my horrible handwriting with text. I decided to put what I had on the internet to share with you all. In Issue 1 we had this stupid thing called Covid. So I drew a comic about an evil persistant little guy inspired by Mr. Mxyzptlk called Mr. Divoc.   So now I am going to attempt to sleep. But before I go to sleep

Retro weather channel

It's 1 a.m. What are they showing on the Weather Channel at 1 a.m.? A show called "Retro 8's Live", which is a show that's like the old "Local on the 8's" show but it's the old '90s style and they input the actual weather in it and it lasts one hour. The ads are jarring when I come back from the '90s style stuff. So, what's on at 2 a.m.? Something called "The Weather Channel." I don't know what it is. I looked recently on 2 a.m. and it was a really cool looking weather report for one hour. Now i

Poems en español

A long time ago, I took Spanish in seventh grade. I didn't do too well in it though. But I noticed that the words "llueve" (rain) and "nueve" (nine) rhymed. I kept that in my memory bank for a long time. It was last night when I couldn't sleep that I thought I'd try to make a poem out of it. Since I forgot the rest of the Spanish I learned, I got my English/Spanish dictionary out and began work. This is the result. I highly doubt the Spanish syntax is correct, but oh well.   llueve en

One bite.

So I kept having to give up on the fly eating just one bit of the banana and then flying away. I woke up after 12 hours of sleep and had an idea. What if I were to just make the flying away code run only after the fly had eaten a bite? Before, I was making it part of the main code, which I think was making the scanline uneven and running too much code. So I decided to attempt to make it so it only runs when the code is running the eating part. I think it works now. Sort of a "duh" moment now whe

Productive (NON-lazy) Sunday.

So finally someone struck up a conversation with me about my 2600 game Fruit Fly Fun. @vitoco suggested I make the banana disappear like the fly was eating it. That didn't take very long, about half an hour or so. But it screwed up the scanline count. I worked and worked, and went to sleep unsuccessful.   Six hours later (I only got six hours of sleep last night!) I woke up and it was very hot. So hot that I couldn't go back to sleep. So I decided to get up at about 6 or so. I then pro

What I want to do

So today I worked on Ugly Uppity Umpire for the Game Boy. I came to realize that this was going to be a much better game than my Commodore 64 game. So I decided I'm going to shelve the C64 game for now and work on Ugly Uppity Umpire until I finish it. I worked on adding level 32. Most of it was trying to make it a beatable level with an idea I had. The underwear at the top and bottom are fast and the one on the right side is slow. So I kept on trying various things until I was happy wi
