Ftff box art.

So I got real bored. I decided to work on a MIDI. I was working on Van Morrison's "Summertime In England." But that's not what this blog entry is about. This is about Frank the Fruit Fly. I got a box template for a Game Boy box. I began working on the box designing. I like to be in control of art in my game. Unless I pass it along to someone else, which is what I did with Jack and the Beanstalk and 1 on 1 Basketball for the Odyssey 2.   So I was drawing when it occured to me that...I c

Crappy 10-line code

So I noticed there was a 10-line BASIC game programming contest, and thought "What could I make that would only take 10 lines to do?" I thought about that Running Zyx game I made for the Jaguar. I put in a blueberry and called it "Blueberry Blast". Just a little crappy program I have decided not to enter into the contest due to the fact it will probably come in dead last. I began work yesterday and finished it up today. I have no idea how they do the stuff they usually do for the 10 li

I was an industrious kid.

So I was a kid. It all happens to us (well, except for babies.) And, as a kid, I made a whole bunch of stuff. Mostly magazines and comic books. As I grew older, I made more things, mainly video games and crossword puzzles. But I still have the urge to make magazines I had like I was a kid.   I found one of my old magazines I made when I was a kid. I probably made it in the doctor's office waiting to make sure my allergy shot didn't overreact like I did every week. Unfortunately it does

The F stands for food

I am back working on Channel F again. I had some new positive thoughts for the sixth game I tried to program earlier. So I began to work on it some more. I also discovered the title screen music wasn't looping, so I had to fix that. And, which is new, I made the menu more legible. While this looks better, I don't know if it will all fit on a TV. I also had to shorten a few game titles. I guess unfortunately the guy who was making the Channel F flashcarts is apparently not goi

I learned how to update my old website.

So I guess I wasted $120 setting up atari2600universe.com. Oh well. The problem was I wasn't using the new File Manager which just happened to show up overnight for me. I was using the old File Manager, which was way better. This new File Manager is a hunk of garbage. I guess I can't center images any more, which is really stupid.   They have this thing called HTML Editor which you can go in and type new stuff to a site, and by doing so, it wrecks the positioning of images and forces t

Atari 2600 Universe is born!

So Atari 2600 Land has bit the dust. The attempt to update the site was blocked by some very rude person at Turbify who didn't speak English very well and hung up on me. So I said "Screw this!" and went to another hosting company. Now the lovely address for all my stuff is www.atari2600universe.com. I just now created it so there's not much on the new site, just the .gb for the latest Frank the Fruit Fly. If you go to the website, you'll see an announcement for something called "It's Amazin

My website won't update.

I checked my Frank the Fruit Fly site. The last update on it was February 17. Which was odd because it says I last updated it on February 25 (yesterday.) So now I want to call my website provider and ask them why, but I don't want to talk to someone I can't understand in another country who doesn't know what I'm talking about. So if this persists, I might as well just shut the website down because what's the use of having a website if you can't update it?   I want people to play my LAT

Super Frank take 2.

I couldn't go to sleep last night. So I decided to attempt adding a Super Game Boy border to Frank the Fruit Fly again. A couple of hours later, verrry sleepy, I had it. Plus I fixed a few more bugs. I went to sleep at about 3:30 a.m. I have no idea why it said before that I had no room in bank 0, and now it fits in bank 0 just fine. I guess sometimes I have to try things more than once. All four enemies are in Robot Ron in 2084, but hardly anyone seems to care. I'm going to take

Let it melt, let it melt, let it melt.

It finally snowed a couple of inches the night before last. Last night the power went out while i was in the bathroom. i thought "oh nooooo!" since I once went 6 days without power, but a few seconds later it came back on again. Right now there's still snow on the ground. Lots of it. The high got to be about 40 degrees, so some of it melted, but there is still some left to melt. It won't tonight since it's supposed to get below freezing.   I worked a ton on Robot Ron today. I got the f

Boggle puzzle.

I was introduced to this type of wordfind in 2017 through an issue of Games magazine. Basically following the rules of Boggle, but with themes, like a word find. I thought to myself , "Gee, this looks simple enough, I think I can make some of these." Six years later I have collected them all I made and put them on a website. I usually think up of a theme and then try to think of at least eight words to fit in a 5x5 grid. I made these all .pngs, but starting with the next one, I have decided to m

Robot Ron in 2084: day 4.

I have been working on an Odyssey² game called "Robot Ron in 2084". For four days now. Today's work was fairly easy. I began work on the enemy, and the score as well. I think I got everything under control except once on the title screen it played the Cedar Games intro on o2em. I don't know what that was about.   Right now I'm working on colors. I had to change the boundaries of Ron and the shots. I don't know what colors I should make this though. Here's what I have currently.

Comix

I have been working on a new webcomic strip series. It's a serial. Each Wednesday, Stupidman's adventures continue. And when one ends, there will be another one. This is in addition to the one I make every Sunday. And if you think these are crap, you should have seen them BEFORE I cleaned them up and replaced the text. Plus, I'm just doing this to reduce my boredom while I'm living. I plan to live forever. Even after the sun explodes, I'll still be here, living in pain because my body got charre

An Odyssey 2 programming adventure

So I got bored with The Golden Q Quest, so I quit working on it. It wasn't my best work anyway. I decided to make a new Odyssey 2 game. If I don't give up on it, I hope to make it as great as Tunnels of Terror. If I shared the title of this new game, it would ruin the surprise and be a huge spoiler to what I am doing. I don't even want to share what it's about. But right now I have a 4k game I started work on a couple of days ago. I worked all day on bank 2. I tested it on a real Odyssey 2 and h

Super Frank

So I decided to make a SGB border for Frank the Fruit Fly. This ended up being harder to do than I anticipated. The SGB border data put in bank 0. This made bank 0 overflow. There was too little room. So something had to be moved to another bank. The title screen music was moved to bank 7 as well as some title screen code, and so the tracker .h file could go. This worked, but there were vertical lines showing up for a few frames right after the SGB was loaded but before the title screen showed u

Back to the banana joke book

I discovered a couple of banana jokes I had written down on paper so I wouldn't forget them. That made me think of the banana joke book I was making and it wouldn't get finished if I didn't work on it. So I made a way to finish it quicker: I put a couple more spaces between the jokes so instead of 6-7 on a page, there's usually 4. This upped my page count as you would expect, to around 20. I was aiming for 100, so I'm 20% finished. I would really like to print a couple of copies from a pro print

test my game.

Well, it snowed a little. It was a dusting, but it left pretty quickly. I had to realize a way to get a good song on my game. I was tired of it blaring the loud music. So I experimented. I found that if I set the music volume to 5C and split the song up into different parts that it didn't have an annoying click sound when the song looped. Of course, the song only has one channel, but it's better than an awkward silence.   I had to split the song up because if I put it all in one file i

It works!

...but it didn't before. My Genesis game that was working just fine in my emulator proved to be not working when it was put into my Everdrive cartridge. I went to sleep at about 3 p.m. and woke up at about 2 a.m. So I tried some stuff and eventually got it working right now. It's about 4 a.m., so I spent almost two hours on it.  I don't know what I did to make it work, though. After a suggestion, it still wasn't working, so I just kept working and working and it eventually worked.   My

Fixed jumping elephant.

So I was trying to fix the jumping problem from yesterday's blog entry about the game. I think I did it. I think I'll call it fixed. I also fixed the size of the screenshot. That turned out to be an emulator problem, not my code. This is a lot better: While fixing the game, it seems that now the elephant falls faster than he normally did, so that's a plus. So having a little bit of gravity would be good. I will post a ROM of what I have once I know it works okay on a real Genesis. I ha

Something was missing

So I decided to work on the Genesis game I've been toying with. Since the blocks I put in there looked like Mario Bros., I decided to make this a Mario Bros. type game. Only with different layouts for the blocks on different levels (like Mario Bros. should have been.) But I was then looking at Eli the Elephant and noticed something was missing. The poor elephant didn't have any tusks! So I had to redo the elephant sprites, all four of them, adding in tusks to Eli. This is how it turned out:

26 squares and deja vu

So last year I thought up of a new thing to make called "26 Squares". It is a crossword consisting of 26 squares, one square for each letter of the alphabet. I thought the English language would be varied enough for this. But I just finished making #26 and already I'm having to force myself to limit certain words, especially the ones with q, x, j, and z in them. Short words, like "vex", or "fix", or "box", "zap", words like that. It gets really hard to do when you outlaw certain words.

Music!

So I finally figured out how to make music for this thing. I had to download yet another tracker. Now I have like 4 trackers on this computer. Game Boy, NES, Game Gear, and now Genesis. I also made the elephant jump when you press A. Unfortunately I could not get gravity working since the elephant would land at various y positions, that would look horrible. It took hours to figure out the correct values to read, so now I think if the elephant stops being on a ground, he'll begin to fall. I w

Ant Capistrano

Well, they came back. The ants have decided to return. There was one in the bathroom and one on the desk in my room. It crawled on my hand. They do that sometimes. So SecondBasic apparently has very limited 32x capabilities, so I've decided to make this a Genesis game. I figured out how to add tiles to my game so it now looks like this: Even though it's no longer a 32x game, I am still active on this, still playing with the programming, trying to understand stuff. Nobody has explained

32x stuff

So I am beginning to make a 32x game. It's going to be about elephants stomping grapefruit. I had to download an emulator and find 32x BIOSes, but I eventually did that. I downloaded Gens because it has 32x support and I want to make a 32x game. And after a few hours of cursing, sprite designing and other programming. I got one sprite to show up on the screen. And now, this is the title screen for the newest 32x game. It's so new, it just got began being worked on. The plural of "

3 ghosts

So I put three ghosts in the game. I have 8 bytes left in that bank. I didn't think I would have enough room but I apparently do. But I tried it on a real Odyssey 2 and the life counter blinks when a letter is gotten. I'm going to try to move the score and life counter down to the bottom of the screen so it doesn't do that any more. I don't think I can make a letter as black as the background.

Third floor, onyx

I tried to make Yars' Revenge on the Odyssey 2, but I got to the point where I was going to put the qotile in the game. So I put the qotile in the game but it doesn't move in lock step with the shield characters like I wanted it to. I tried putting the qotile drawing code in various places, but nothing seemed to work. I guess I'll pick it back up later as I wanted to work on Odyssey 2 coding, but not with tiny issues like that not working the way I wanted them to.   So I went back to w
